CSTE/CDC/ASPPH Applied Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program
CSTE, in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH), the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), and the Public Health Informatics Institute (PHII), has established the Applied Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program in order to provide high quality training assignments for recent graduates in the expanding field of applied public health informatics, while aiming to secure long-term career placement for the Fellows at the state or local level. During the one-year, mentored training assignments, fellows will work closely with experienced informaticists, epidemiologists and public health practitioners at the state and local level, as well as with those working at the federal level with the CDC.
Overview
Fellows will experience a broad range of projects and activities that address building personal public health informatics competency and increasing capacity within the host health agency. Fellows will lead at least one project that supports public health informatics priorities within their host health agency. Fellows will be provided ongoing continuing education and training within public health informatics to increase knowledge throughout the year.
Applied Public Health Informatics Fellowship
The fellowship program is designed for recent master or doctoral level graduates in informatics or a related field who are interested in the practice of public health at the state or local level.
APHIF CORE COMPETENCIES
Through the training and on-the-job projects and activities, Fellows will become proficient in the APHIF core competencies in public health informatics.

4.2. Appropriately utilizes software tools in support of public health data analysis

5.1. Advocates for the development of integrated, cost-effective public health information systems
5.2. Applies appropriate public health informatics standards in all projects and systems
5.3. Conducts informatics training consultations
Eligibility
To be eligible applicants must meet the following application criteria:
- A doctoral or masters level degree is required.Qualifying degree must be from an accredited academic institution in one of the following:
- Public health informatics or other health related informatics discipline
- Epidemiology
- Statistics
- Computer science, information science, information systems
- Public health, medicine, nursing, health care, health policy, health-services research
- Desire to pursue a long-term career at the state or local level
- United States citizenship or Permanent Residency
- All candidates must meet the above criteria as well as at least one of the following:
- A certificate issued by a degree-granting academic institution in public health informatics or master or doctoral-level coursework in public health informatics.
- Demonstrated academic or professional expertise in public health informatics competencies.
Application Process
All applications will be reviewed against the absolute requirements listed above and will be formally evaluated by a review committee.
After review and evaluation, top applicants will be selected for in-person interviews. Finalists will then be selected and matched with the available positions at qualifying state and local health agencies.
